| Our dog Freckles was abandoned in the Arizona desert where she had six puppies. She managed to keep them all alive until they were rescued by a sheriff's deputy. He put all seven of them in a jail cell with three female prisoners as part of an on-going animal rescue program in the prison. A few months later, the pups were all adopted but sadly no one wanted Freckles. My wife went down to volunteer for the program, found the little dog and brought her home.
Freckles later became a Delta Society pet partner working in homeless shelters and domestic abuse shelters where she visited with the little kids women would bring in with them. She also worked Red Cross evacuation centers during a big forest fire in Arizona, and she went to Biloxi a week after Hurricane Katrina.
We moved to Asheville, North Carolina where Freckles participated in a first grader reading program. She also worked with kids on the pediatric oncology ward at the local hospital. I’m sad to say Freckles passed away last year.
You can learn more about Freckles’ story in the book I wrote about her called Freckles: The Mystery of the Little White Dog in the Desert. It’s an ASPCA Henry Bergh Gold Medal Winner. There is also a website, www.FrecklesFriends.org
